Megan Davis Capstone

Students, from various departments, have the great opportunity to work on their capstone or thesis in UC FETCHLAB, under the supervision of Dr. Pete.

Megan Davis is an undergraduate audiology student and she is working as a tech in UC FETCHLAB and at the same time on her capstone in our lab. The goal of this research is to determine whether or not different genres of music will alter the behavior of canines. The participating dogs will receive an hearing test from the Facility for Education and Testing of Canine Hearing and Laboratory for Animal Bioacoustics (UC FETCHLAB), the internationally known leader in canine audiology.

First, a hearing test (BAER) will be administered on the dog prior to the musical test. The dog will receive lidocaine (numbing cream) on both sides of the head near the ears and on top of their head to alleviate any discomfort. About 10 minutes after applying the lidocaine, then we will place 3 subdermal needle electrodes just under the top layers of the skin where the lidocaine has been applied. Then, a soft earpiece will be inserted into one ear (at a time) that projects a clicking noise into the dog’s ear canal.

As long as the dog stays relatively still, the hearing test will be completed rather quickly. After the hearing test, the dog will be placed into a sound booth by itself. From there, I will perform the music test. There will be 3 songs from 3 different genres of music on the track playing into the sound booth. A song will be played for 1 minute, and then there will be a 2-minute break in-between songs. The next song will play for 1 minute and so on. While the dog is in the sound booth, their behaviors and actions will be recorded with a camera.
