FETCH~LAB Collaborators University of Cincinnati
In addition to testing canine hearing our bioacoustics lab is actively working in collaboration with colleagues in other institutions on a range of investigative studies on the hearing in a range of animal species. Our growing list of collaborators currently includes:
  • Cincinnati Zoo
    - Monica Stoops, Ph.D.
  • Dolphin Communication Project
    - Kathleen Dudzinski, Ph.D.
  • GREMM & CIMM Canada
    - Robert Michaud, MSci, Director
Robert Michaud is president and founding member of GREMM: a non-profit organization dedicated to scientific research and education relative to the marine mammals of the St. Lawrence and the protection of their habitat. Robert completed a master’s degree at Laval University on the behavior of St. Lawrence beluga whales in 1989. He is a Ph.D. candidate at Dalhousie University where he is presently completing a thesis on the social organization of beluga whales. He has directed GREMM’s research programs on the behavioral ecology of beluga whales since 1985. He has co-directed several master’s theses and participated in numerous primary scientific publications and technical reports. The research programs cover several aspects of beluga whale ecology and are based on the use of a wide variety of techniques, such as photo-identification, systematic surveys at sea or from the air, land-based observation, bioacoustics, radio-telemetry and genetic analysis.
    - Michel Moisan
Michel Moisan is a wildlife technician born in Montreal, Quebec. He graduated in 1980 and has since been involved in a number of research projects throughout eastern Canada. His experience includes work with terrestrial mammals, migratory birds and freshwater fishes. In 1987, he began working at sea as a diver on research projects in the fisheries and aquaculture. Michel has been a senior technician with GREMM (www.gremm.org) since 1995. He is captain of the research vessel Le Bleuvet and is responsible for the at-sea operations of the group. Michel is involved in all research projects of GREMM, particularly in the long-term study of the behavioral ecology of the St. Lawrence Beluga Whale. He lives in the small town of Tadoussac, Quebec.

    - Tracy Romano, Ph.D.
Tracy Romano PhD is the Vice President of Research and Veterinary Services at the Mystic Aquarium and Institute for Exploration and assists in conducting pathology research in stress and distress in marine mammals.
    - J. Lawrence Dunn, VMD
Larry Dunn, VMD, has served as Mystic Aquarium’s Staff Veterinarian since its inception in 1973. Following graduate work at the Graduate School of Oceanography of the University of Rhode Island (URI) he spent three years in the US Navy at the Naval Oceanographic Office where he conducted bioacoustic research. He then received the VMD degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. He has held numerous positions including President of the International Association for Aquatic Animal Medicine, adjunct faculty at URI and as a reviewer for numerous scholarly journals. He has been an Aquavet faculty member since its inception and is an author of more than 50 papers on aquatic animal medicine. His interests include infectious diseases of marine mammals and aquatic animal medicine education.
  • The Georgia Aquarium
    - Eric Gaglione
Eric C. Gaglione, is manager of the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta responsible for all activities involving the care of the living collection for Cold Water Quest, River Scout and Georgia Explorer Galleries. With a degree in Zoology and Wild Life Management from the State University of New York, Empire State College, he has been active in animal husbandry and aquaria management at several aquaria in the eastern United States. Eric currently serves on a variety of professional committees and on the Board of Directors of the International Marine Animal Trainers Association (IMATA) as the Third Vice President.

    - Frank Musiek, Ph.D.
Frank Musiek, Ph.D., one of the co-originators of the canine audiology clinic, is a renowned hearing researcher, scholar, teacher and clinical audiologist. His research on electrophysiology and central auditory processing has led to the discovery and implementation of numerous tools that are widely used for assessment of the auditory brainstem and central auditory pathways. Dr. Musiek has published over 140 refereed articles and presented more than 220 invited lectures and seminars and nearly 300 papers at national and international conferences, research symposia and other venues around the world. He has developed four clinical audiologic tests, three of which are mainstays of the clinical central auditory test battery and has published nine books and authored 35 book chapters. He has earned an international reputation as an authority on the human auditory system and hearing.
